good writing with you and to help you prepare for future educational pursuits. Take advantage of what
we have to offer. Your advisor can help you register for classes and see that you meet requirements for
transferring to the four-year university you choose. You can meet other English majors and faculty by
joining a club affiliated with our department or by participating in any number of department-sponsored activities.

A degree in English opens many educational and professional doors. Just as importantly, however,
the study of language and literature enriches a student's understanding of and connection with the surrounding world.
Says Susan Sontag, "To me, literature is a calling, even a kind of salvation. It connects me with an enterprise
that is over 2,000 years old. What do we have from the past? Art and thought. That's what lasts. That's what continues to
feed people and give them an idea of something better."
